It’s probably not a huge surprise to anyone that Gearbox seems to be working on Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2, but one developer’s LinkedIn profile, which was first spotted on Reddit, has delivered some actual confirmation of the projects’ existence. Former technical director for Lost Boys Interactive, Randel Reiss, mentioned both of the titles on his social media page in the context of Unreal Engine 4 projects he’s worked on. The studio has operated as a supporting developer for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands alongside Gearbox, so it may well be part of the development of future titles as well.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has made references to Borderlands 4 in the past as well, though always in a somewhat joking manner. Other hints at the title, such as when a voice actress listed a role in the game on her CV, turned out to be misunderstandings.

Tiny Tina's spin-off brought a fantasy-spin to the Borderlands formula.

Borderlands is a popular loot shooter series with stylized graphics that have become one of its trademarks, while Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a fantasy-inspired spin-off from the series that was spawned by one of its DLCs. Both have the same characteristic visual style as well as the series’ typical humor.

Rumor has it that Gearbox is currently on sale, because its parent company Embracer Group is looking for a cash injection as part of its current restructuring program, which over the course of its existence already cost over 900 Embracer employees their jobs. However, this cost-cutting program also led to the cancellation of many projects worked on by Embracer’s studios, so it’s not clear whether both of the games have survived those cuts.

Borderlands 3, the latest entry into the franchise, was released in 2019, while the first Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was launched in 2022. Gearbox worked with 2K Games on the publishing side for both titles.
