Remember when Call of Duty fans were outraged about a full-blown title coming out in 2023 and felt betrayed, because Activision apparently broke a promise about that not being the case? We may have finally found an explanation for the confusion: Bloomberg reports that CoD 2023 – currently under development at Sledgehammer Games – will continue the story of Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and that content from the current game will carry over to the new one.

While initial plans did envision the game as an expansion to MW2, which was in line with Activision’s communicated goal of having a two-year release cycle for CoD in the future, things changed as the development went on. Since the expansion was supposed to include a single-player campaign and new multiplayer maps anyways, the step seemed natural.

It also seems like the development will be a joint effort between all the major Call of Duty studios with Sledgehammer getting support from Infinity Ward and Treyarch due to the last-minute change of plans.

The project does not seem to have a name yet, though Bloomberg says it’s probably not going to be Modern Warfare 3. People speaking to the outlet also remained cautious, as plans could still change between now and fall, when the new game is supposed to be released.

There is also the remaining question of the proposed Activision Blizzard takeover by Microsoft, which will likely find a resolution in summer and may lead to further challenges and changes, as Microsoft has promised to give both Nintendo and NVIDIA GeForce NOW full access to upcoming CoD titles. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and other key personnel are fully embroiled in the conflict with Sony that resulted from the pending deal.

A two-year cycle is also not off the table yet, as some executives at Activision seem to favor mixing two years of Modern Warfare with two years of Black Ops in the future.
