HoYoverse announces Honkai Star Rail PS5 release date

All aboard

HoYoverse announced the Honkai Star Rail PS5 release date during Sony’s September State of Play. Honkai Star Rail on PS5 launches on Oct. 11, 2023, and it’ll include all current content - the end of the Luofu story, for example, and the Swarm addition in Herta’s Simulated Universe, at least if the trailer showing all these things is anything to go by.

The news comes shortly after HoYoverse held technical tests on the PS5.

Honkai Star Rail takes HoYoverse on a different track from the studio’s hit Genshin Impact. It’s a sci-fi space game, for starters, and it’s a turn-based RPG rather than an action game.

An anime man with shoulder-length white hair reclines on a golden throne with his left hand resting against his chin.

You play as the Trailblazer, an amnesiac brought to life by a Stellaron – a mysterious object that seems to leave chaos and destruction in its wake – by an intergalactic criminal. There’s a lot going on from the start, and the pacing is much improved compared to Genshin Impact.

Star Rail is also a gacha game, meaning you’ll spend in-game items for a chance to recruit certain characters or obtain rare weapons.

Those chances are low, admittedly, though Star Rail gives you plenty of ways to earn that currency. Each character is aligned with an element and a path that determines what kind of skills they use. Preservation characters, for example, learn defensive skills, while destruction characters excel at dealing heavy damage.
