Minecraft and Dungeons & Dragons are a combination that’s kind of out of the blue, but that also makes perfect sense when you think about it. Minecraft is quite literally about worldbuilding and player freedom, but lacks any narrative element giving structure to your adventures, which D&D can provide with its class system and rules. A new DLC for Minecraft, which was announced on March 28, 2023, and is set to release sometime in Spring this year, is making that combo reality.

“Coming soon this Spring 2023. Experience a dramatic tale unfold with Minecraft’s Dungeons & Dragons DLC. Explore iconic locations in the Forgotten Realms like Icewind Dale and Candlekeep, battling Beholders, Mimics, and more,” Wizards of the Coast described the DLC on its YouTube channel.

Players will be able to explore five locations within the Forgotten Realms setting of D&D, fighting iconic enemies such as a mighty Red Dragon and gaining XP as well as loot.

Naturally, they’ll get to choose their class just like in the pen-and-paper RPG and will have to trust in their luck when it comes to rolling the D20 – yes, you’ll use dice rolls even in the Minecraft version of the game, so better hope for some of those natural crits. This campaign will include full voice acting for its featured characters as well.

This seems like a great opportunity for any D&D fans to get reluctant friends to try out the RPG or introduce family members to the concept.
