Baldur's Gate 3: can you have multiple romances in BG3?

Can you have polyamorous relationships with multiple characters in Baldur's Gate 3?

In a game with so many colorful characters and party members, it’s entirely possible that you might end up falling for more than one of them. Sure, we love Shadowheart’s earnestness and adorable hairstyle, but we also see great appeal in Astarion’s aloof attitude and poetic cadence. Choosing isn’t easy, so is it possible we could perhaps have…both?

The answer: it’s complicated. We’ll explain how polyamorous relationships work in Baldur’s Gate 3.

You can have polyamorous relationships in Baldur’s Gate 3, but only with certain characters. Some companions are open to polyamory, some are closed to it, and some will only accept it with certain characters. The community is still working things out with everyone in the game, but it has a lot to do with origin vs non-origin characters.

Origin companions will never be willing to have polyamorous relationships with each other. They are:

  • Shadowheart
  • Lae’zel
  • Astarion
  • Gale
  • Wyll
  • Karlach

However, Shadowheart and Astarion are willing to have a poly relationship with non-origin companions. While we don’t yet know all of the possibilities here, we do know that Halsin, Minthara, and Mizora are all happy to have open relationships.

There are also two unique cases. Firstly, the Guardian. No one really seems to care if you have a romance with them, and it happens almost entirely separately from everything else. Then, if you’re in Baldur’s Gate and decide you want to have a fling with one of the brothel workers, you’ll be free to do so.
