Here's how to complete the butterfly puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy: The Centaur and the Stone. When you first start this quest, you’ll head to meet Poppy Sweeting somewhere to the West of Irondale. It might seem like any other quest, but The Centaur and the Stone has the most difficult butterfly puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy.

In this quest, you're looking for Moonstone in the aptly named Moonstone Cave.

Moonstone Cave's first butterfly puzzle

Use Lumos to make the butterflies follow you around.

Use Lumos to make the butterflies follow you around.

Head through the cave until you come to a room with a locked gate and two butterfly spinner switches on either side of it.

You’ll also notice that there are crypts nearby with handles that you can pull — four in total, with two on each side. There are runes beneath the handles and also two runes etched into the walls between the handles on each side.

Your goal is to pull two switches that match the runes in the middle.

Once done, a wall will lower down and reveal a butterfly on each side. Use Lumos to make the butterflies follow you to the spinners and then cast Depulso continuously at the spinners to wind them up and open the door.

This isn’t the tough puzzle, however — that’s on the other side of the gate.

For the next butterfly puzzle, you need to get three butterflies over the broken bridge, but you only have two on the spinners you just used. Follow the steps below:

  • Take one from the spinners and place it on the spinner to the left as you walk through the gate.
  • Spin it around with Depulso and it will raise a bridge. Take that butterfly across the bridge and place it into the door.
  • Next, go back and get your other butterfly and take it through the gate. But instead of taking it to the door, take it to the spinner on the right.
  • Use Depulso to spin it and look towards the bridge. You’ll notice a pillar raise out of the water, complete with another butterfly. It’ll only emerge for a short time, so you need to grab it quickly and insert it into the door.
  • Once you’ve done that, go back to the spinner on the right and get your final butterfly for the door.
