Larian is already cooking what comes after Baldur’s Gate 3

After the immense triumph of Baldur’s Gate 3, which itself stands on the shoulders of Larian Studios’ Divinity: Original Sin series, everyone is waiting with bated breath for what the Belgian developer will do next. While more Baldur’s Gate 3 content is on the table – a new Epilogue arrived in the game just last month – the developers have stated on numerous occasions that they’d prefer to take on a smaller project next.

Whatever that might be, the gears are officially in motion: Studio boss Swen Vincke has excitedly revealed on social media that “after four months of rewriting and rewriting and abandoning ideas and then revisiting them, finally figured out what Act 1 on this thing I've been working on needs to be.”

Swen Vincke, the man in armor, is hard at work on Larian's next project.

He did, however, caution against getting too excited about this development: “It's not what you think and this is not a teaser for an announcement. I’m just genuinely excited about where this is going and wanted to share some of my excitement. It'll be quite some time before we talk about this.”

Plus, there is always the danger of the team not liking what he wrote, he explained: “I haven't shared it with anyone yet so it may be they all think it's bad and then I'll just kill this thread, go sit in a corner with my dog and pretend none of this happened.” Certainly a feeling every writer can empathize with.

After Baldur’s Gate 3 sweeped award shows left, right, and center last year, is still putting up triple digit player numbers on Steam, and has enshrined itself as one of the greatest games of all time, pretty much anything Larian Studios comes up with is going to receive massive attention, for better or worse. On the plus side, basically anything will be a smaller scale project than this Dungeons & Dragons game, which led to a massive workforce and infrastructure expansion for the company – resources that continue to be at Larian’s disposal.

We’ll not get ahead of ourselves for now, though – just as Swan Vincke said, anything concrete will be years away at this point and anyone telling you otherwise should have to make a DC30 Deception check.
