Honkai Star Rail pre-registration numbers just keep climbing, even though the open-world RPG from the Genshin Impact devs still doesn’t have a release date. Developer HoYoverse announced that pre-registrations have reached the 3.5 million mark, which is the penultimate milestone in the team’s campaign to reach 5 million before launch. When that launch might be is anyone’s guess, although some signs point to it being sooner rather than later.

Honkai Star Rail recently entered its final closed beta, and our Marco Wutz said the game feels polished almost to the point where it seems like a final build.

As with most pre-registration campaigns, those who sign up get a small windfall of in-game rewards as the numbers go higher. For Star Rail, those rewards include a free 4-star character and up to 20 free pulls in the RPG’s gacha system – similar to Genshin Impact and its banners. So far, HoYoverse is giving away 15 free pulls, with the final five dependent on whether pre-registrations reach 5 million.

Despite drawing on themes and styles – and names – from HoYoverse’s other series, Honkai Star Rail is a standalone, turn-based RPG that pulls from several popular sources for its inspirations. You play as an amnesiac who joins the Star Rail team as they travel across the galaxy and push back against an ancient evil.

Persona-like battles meets with Tales of-style banter with a hint of Nihon Falcom’s Trails series thrown in with the turn-based combat, its break system, and the wonderfully over-the-top cut-in scenes for each character’s special moves.

Expect more Honkai Star Rail news as the final beta winds down and we gradually pull closer to a launch announcement.
