Pikmin 4 will have many new things in store for fans of the series and if you’re unsure if the new features are for you, then there’s no better way to find out than playing it yourself. Nintendo put a free demo for the game out on the eShop just for this purpose today, allowing you to dive into all of the changes and improvements made to the formula in this upcoming iteration.

And there are a lot of those: There are new types of Pikmin, night expeditions that seem to be inspired by tower defense games, new RPG mechanics allow you to customize your suit with different kinds of equipment and upgrades, an adorable and useful rescue puppy accompanies you, caves from Pikmin 2 are back, and there are challenge battles against the AI or other players, in which you need to secure more loot inside a time limit than your opponent.

That’s a whole lot of features! Though it has to be said, with Pikmin 3 having come out in 2013 on the Wii U, the developers had more than enough time to think about all the cool stuff they wanted to put into the next game.

The demo release has been accompanied by a new trailer showing off all the things we’ve mentioned above – it’s almost seven minutes long, so even if you’ve got no time to play the demo you’ll be able to gather some impressions from there.

Pikmin 4 is set to be launched on July 21, 2023.
