Ninja Theory announces Hellblade 2 release date at Xbox Direct

And it’s a digital-only release

Ninja Theory announced the Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 release date during the January 2024 Xbox Direct and said the long-awaited sequel is a digital-only release. The news came at the end of another behind-the-scenes look at the action game and some commentary on how Ninja Theory is bringing Senua’s complex story to life.

Hellblade 2 launches on May 21, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it’ll cost $49.99. As Ninja Theory is an Xbox studio, you can also grab it on Xbox Game Pass as a day-one launch.

“We took advantage of the freedom that digital-only distribution offered us to create a game of the length that fit perfectly with our intended experience but could be sold at a lower price to reflect the shorter length of our story,” Dom Matthews, Ninja Theory studio head, said in an Xbox Wire post. “This framework allowed us to focus on the things we really care about – taking our fans on an unforgettable journey into Senua’s unique world.”

Ninja Theory didn’t have much to say about what we can expect from Hellblade 2. However, the team did reassure viewers that they worked closely with psychologists and people who live with psychosis – a problem that Senua continues to live with in the sequel – to create a sympathetic and accurate depiction of the condition.

Ninja Theory says the deep, introspective story and advanced motion capture and audio technology combine to make a harrowing and unforgettable experience. That sounds like marketing speak, but after seeing the handful of new Hellblade 2 footage Ninja Theory showed, I can believe it.
