Square Enix survey asks fans about its next mobile game’s genre
Square Enix is asking fans which genre Team Asano’s next mobile game should have. A survey appeared in the Japanese server of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which said Asano is currently “in the planning stages for a new service game” and wanted to gather some opinions from players (via Dengeki Online and Reset Era).
Asano wants this game to be something fans of the entire Square Enix library can enjoy and something that can run for a long time. A key concept is also that it’s going to be an “all-star” game featuring characters from IPs such as Octopath Traveler, Bravely, Triangle Strategy, Live-A-Live, Various Daylife, and more.
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has been out since 2020 in Japan.

When it comes to the genre, however, the developer still seems to be undecided – hence the survey. Square Enix and Asano gave respondents three different options: a city-builder, a dungeon crawler, and a match-three RPG.
In the city-builder, players would develop their town and bring together the different characters under this goal, grouping them up in parties and sending them out into the world on quests. Any battles would be resolved automatically.
In the dungeon crawler, maps would be randomly generated with players attempting to make it all the way through. It’d be a roguelike game with turn-based battles.
In the match-three RPG players would have to match tiles in battle, creating combos and dealing damage. Characters would have interactions and scenes together outside of combat.
You can technically participate in the survey as well, though it requires a Japanese Square Enix account.
