Nintendo has announced that a remake of the classic SNES game Super Mario RPG is getting a remake on the Nintendo Switch, and it’s coming this year.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was originally developed by Square in collaboration with Nintendo on the Super Nintendo back in 1996. It became a bit of a smash hit in the years following, and has attracted a huge cult following in the last decade or so.

It even featured on the SNES Classic console, but hasn’t been added to the Nintendo Switch Online service yet. It seems like you won’t need it though, because this ground-up remake seems to be the best you’re going to get out of the experience.

All the stuff you’d expect to see in a remake for Super Mario RPG is there — the music, the characters, the cutscenes and combat, they’ve all been lovingly recreated. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and it’s what fans have been waiting for for a long time.

It doesn’t look like much has changed in the way of gameplay mechanics, characters, and story, but that’s absolutely fine, since it was always pretty solid even back on the SNES.

Take a look for yourself in the trailer below.

And here’s what Nintendo has to say about it:

Originally released on Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics! Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists, turns and treasure. Mario must team up with his allies to face down a menacing force known as the Smithy Gang in order to recover seven stars and repair the Star Road. Whether you played the original game or have yet to take the journey, you can dive into this Nintendo Switch version of the very first RPG in the Super Mario series!

Super Mario RPG’s remake will launch on the Nintendo Switch later this year, on November 17.
