BG3 save incompatible version: causes and solutions for Baldur’s Gate 3’s save error
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the biggest games available right now, but unfortunately it’s come with a catch. With so many players enjoying the game, a bunch of bugs are coming to light, and Larian Studios might be tackling them too fast. The most recent patch, Hotfix #4, actually caused severe crashes, and thus the patch has been rolled back, causing even more problems.
This brings us to the “save incompatible version” error you might be looking at right now. In this guide we’re breaking down the exact cause, and how you can recover your save or continue playing as soon as possible.

The current major issue is the fact that Hotfix #4 has been rolled back, meaning if you played on August 16 with Hotfix #4 installed and saved your game, and have now rolled back, the version of your save will be too advanced for the version of the game you’re playing.
If you are currently on Hotfix #4 and haven’t rolled back yet, you should be able to continue playing your save file offline. If you’ve already rolled back, then resuming your most recent save will be a little awkward.

If you want to continue playing BG3 right now, you should resume your gave from a save made before you installed Hotfix #4. This is not a good solution, mind, as you might end up replaying several hours of progress. Not ideal at all.
If you do not wish to replay several hours of gameplay, or wish to continue from your most recent save no matter what, then you will have to wait for Hotfix #4 to be re-released. We don’t have an exact estimate on how long this may take, but patches and Hotfixes for Baldur’s Gate 3 have been dropping regularly since launch, so we’re hopeful that this will be solved before the approaching weekend.
