BG3 Necromancy of Thay with Dark Amethyst

You need to find a Dark Amethyst to open the tome, and thankfully there is one hidden in the Blighted Village. Go over to the well and pass a skill check to investigate it, this will let you go inside.

This cave is filled with teleporting spiders, and on the western edge is the Dark Amethyst you need – the only problem being it’s protected by the queen spider. This is a very tough fight, so you may want to come back when you’re stronger, or attempt to make a stealth infiltration.

However you do it, pick up the Dark Amethyst and attempt to read the book again. You’ll now have the option to slot the gem into the book’s mouth to open it. Do so, and you’ll be faced with three Wisdom saving throws in a row, increasing in difficulty from 10 to 20.

Beat all three throws (or save-scum them – it’s ok, we all do it), and you’ll be rewarded with Forbidden Knowledge, a buff that gives you a permanent +1 to Wisdom checks and the Speak with Dead ability. Just know that there may be consequences for this knowledge later on…

BG3 Necromancy of Thay

Examining the tome will reveal that it is immune to almost all forms of damage, with only Radiant damage having any effect. Thankfully, you should have someone capable of that with you – Shadowheart. Drop the book on the ground and get her to use Guiding Bolt on the book to destroy it.

You’ll then have to fight three shadows in a tricky fight, as they are heavily resistant to all forms of physical attacks. This means you’ll be relying on your magic users to get you through this one – hope you’ve refreshed your spell slots.

Defeat them and that’ll be that. The quest is complete and you get no reward aside from the XP killing the shadows gives you. It may appear to be the worse path, but at least you won’t have to deal with any potential consequences of knowing the forbidden knowledge.
