Unlike previous Diablo games, in Diablo 4, your character can now own a horse, making it much easier to journey through the lands of Sanctuary. You’ll be seeing a lot of players and non-player characters riding horses in the game, so you might be wondering how to get one yourself.

Travelling on horseback saves you a lot of time exploring Diablo 4’s vast open world and getting to world boss events, dungeons, strongholds and more, so you should prioritize getting your first steed as quickly as possible.

If you’ve already tried buying a mount cosmetic from the shop without having a horse, you’ve been warned that "mount access must be unlocked in-game before using mounts."

You also went to Kyovashad’s stable at the beginning of the game, and spoke with Oskar after meeting Lorath there. The stable menu should be showing you the exact name of the quest you need to complete to gain access to mounts, but that mount quest won’t be available to you if you haven’t progressed to a specific point in the story.

Trying to use a stable before getting your first horse will give you the name of the quest you need to complete in order to unlock mounts in the game.

When do you get a mount in Diablo 4

Although you meet the stable master at Kyovashad within the first hour of the story, it will take quite some time before you can actually mount your own horse.

You first discover the stable at Kyovashad when you meet there with Lorath within the first hour of Diablo 4's main story.

You get your first horse in Diablo 4 during the main campaign after completing Act III, towards the end of which you fight Brol. Finishing the first three acts should take you up to 10 hours if you focus mostly on the main quests, doing little to no side content. When you go back to Kyovashad at the start of Act IV, the “Mount: Doran’s Favor” quest will automatically appear. Completing it will give you your first horse.

Where to get a mount in Diablo 4

To unlock your first mount in the game, you need to go to Kyovashad at the beginning of Act IV and talk to Oskar, the stable master (if you haven't talked to him already) as part of the “Mount: Doran’s Favor” quest. You then go to meet Doran at the Cathedral of Light, which is also what you need to do as the opening of Act IV. That’s where you get your first horse - Doran will point you back to the stable master and your horse will be waiting for you there.

It can be somewhat disappointing that unlocking mounts can take up to 10 hours of gameplay, but the good news is that once you have the mount for your first character, you won’t have to unlock it again for any future characters you create.
