Fans throw a tantrum over Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition’s DLC vouchers

CD Projekt Red has announced the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, a new physical version of the game that will be in stores as early as December 5, 2023. The Ultimate Edition includes both the base game upgraded to the 2.0 version and its expansion, Phantom Liberty, allowing fans to get the completed RPG in a single box. Prices have not been named as of right now.

However, PS5 fans are mad about one detail they noted on the game boxes CD Projekt Red has revealed. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on PS5 will only include the base game with its 2.0 update on disc, while Phantom Liberty will be present in the form of a voucher for the PS Store, allowing players to redeem the code and download the expansion.

In contrast, the Xbox Series X|S version of the game includes everything on disc, while the PC version is fully digital and will only include download codes. This has been clarified by CDPR’s Community Manager Marcin Momot.

If any developers want to include DLC in a new boxed edition of one of their games, which is sold on one of Sony’s platforms, they need to basically create an entirely new SKU due to the brand-new content being present, which is obviously a lot more work and investment than just chugging in additional discs like it seems to be the case for Xbox. This phenomenon has been visible for similar Ultimate Edition-type versions of other games as well.

At the end of the day, it’s probably simply not worth it for CD Projekt Red to go through that entire process for a few additional sales – less valuable, physical sales at that. Suboptimal for collectors, sure, but ultimately the economically sound decision to make.

Phantom Liberty contains a new spy-thriller story line for the RPG, which has been lauded for its narrative. You can read more in our Phantom Liberty DLC review. Update 2.0 fixed most of the issues players had with the initial release of Cyberpunk 2077, bringing CD Projekt Red back into the community’s grace big time.
