Check out Capcom's Kunitsu-Gami deep-dive gameplay trailer

I'm Soh'ld

Following the March 2024 Xbox Partner Showcase, Capcom dove a bit further into the action-tower defense blend Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. The fantasy game still doesn’t have a firm release date, but it looks like one worth waiting for.

You play as Soh, a warrior tasked with defending the magic maiden Yoshiro as the two defend Mat Kafuku from the Seethe, Kunitsu-Gami-speak for monsters and otherworldly spirits. By day, Soh and Yoshiro travel around the villages of Mt Kafuku and cut off passages to the other world by cleansing Torii gates and purifying villagers. Purified peasants join your ranks and can take on specific roles – woodcutters as melee fighters, for example, while ascetics use spells to deal with the Seethe.

A loyal carpenter also follows Soh around and handily fixes defensive structures in any village you stop at.

After cleansing an area, you’ll spend the day deciding where to play your doughty village companions and how best to contend with the threats of night. Seethe pour into the world once the moon rises, and you’ll have to think and adapt quickly to meet the threat – and keep Yoshiro safe. Thankfully, you can adjust villager placement during the night, even in the heat of battle.

It reminds me a lot of Monster Hunter Rise's raids, only better. Rise's raids grew tedious quickly if you played alone, but at least in Kunitsu-Gami, you have allies by your side at all times.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess launches for Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and PS5 later in 2024.
