Sorry, Mark Zuckerberg, but "goblin mode" is way more important than your vision of the future where everyone looks like a Nintendo Mii.

For the past couple of years, many game developers and tech companies have been chasing the dream of the metaverse - a virtual world where players can live out a second life with their friends - despite it already existing in games like Eve Online.

Still, despite that push, the metaverse is no match for goblin mode.

The publisher behind the Oxford English Dictionary named "goblin mode" the 2022 Word of the Year, following a public vote where the phrase beat out "metaverse".

The dictionary describes goblin mode as thus: "A type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations."

What will happen when the two words combine and people go full goblin mode inside the metaverse is anyone's guess.
