Minecraft passes 300 million copies sold, becoming the best-selling video game of all time

Minecraft's latest sales update brings it across the 300 million barrier, more than any other game in history

The title of “best-selling video game ever” has been disputed for some time, but with its latest sales update, Minecraft has a firm claim to the top spot.

If you were to ask Wikipedia, Minecraft has already been the best-selling video game ever for some time. Still, the main competitor to that claim is Tetris, which across its many paid versions and platforms has sold anywhere between 100 million and 425 million copies depending on who you ask.

We’ll probably never know for sure what the real number is Mojang has now confirmed that Minecraft has passed 300 million sales, making a convincing argument to be the best-selling video game ever made.

It does seem like the sales growth will stop anytime soon either. In 2021 Minecraft had sold just 238 million copies, meaning the past two years have seen 62 million sales, which is quite impressive for a 12-year-old game. Whether you believe the high-end estimates of Tetris’ sales or not, it’s fair to say that with sales refusing to slow down, Minecraft will smash through even those number barriers in the next few years.
