Mortal Kombat 1 creator promises Wi-Fi filter after wrestling fan begged on live TV
For some reason, big wrestling events always contain fan signs with video game opinions on them, and they are pretty bad most of the time. Sometimes, though, those fans do get it right – and their message is read by the right people. Case in point: A Mortal Kombat 1 fan held up a sign at the latest AEW pay-per-view event, Full Gear, begging series co-creator Ed Boon to add a Wi-Fi filter to the fighting game.
Boon apparently saw a social media post about the sign and responded, writing: “It’s koming soon, I swear! Wi-Fi filter and Kross-play! We just gotta make sure they’re solid. More info koming soon! Thanks for your patience.” A bit later, he added: “We’ll be rolling out the features. WiFi filter/decline comes first.”
While holding up a sign at a wrestling event in the hopes of getting a message across seems like you might as well scream into the void, it can be an effective way to get your point across, apparently – kind of like social media, I guess.
A Wi-Fi filter will allow Mortal Kombat 1 players to automatically decline matchmaking with any opponent playing the game on a wireless connection, which can lead to a choppy experience – and that's obviously the last thing you want in a fighting game, in which every frame counts as you attack and defend.
According to Boon, crossplay between different platforms will come after the implementation of a Wi-Fi filter, allowing players to fight each other across platforms. Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
