It’s a glorious time to be alive for fighting game fans with all the iconic series releasing strong entries into their respective franchises recently – that makes it easy to forget that one of the most successful launches in the genre just before this wave of high profile releases was the free-to-play platform brawler MultiVersus from WB Games, which may be coming back soon after a hiatus if McDonalds is to be trusted.

It initially had strong numbers on Steam when it opened its doors for a testing period, but that success fizzled out when some strange decisions regarding monetization and progression were made, which turned players away from the game. Still, it made enough of a splash to win Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2022 and the 26th Annual DICE Awards – no mean feat.

MultiVersus was a sensation in 2022.

Even more curious, WB Games decided to end the “test” that ran for close to a year between June 2022 and July 2023 (a timeframe that could have fooled anyone into believing it actually was fully released), telling fans that the title would come back in 2024 after feedback had been worked into it.

With how strange this game’s launch process has been so far, it’s almost no wonder that our first hint at MultiVersus potentially re-releasing soon comes from none other than McDonalds Australia. According to the Maccas website, a collaboration with MultiVersus is set to begin “soon” that will see toys featuring some of the game’s characters be available at McDonalds.

McDonalds is either teasing the game's re-release or is just really, really late to the party.

Batman, Finn, Bugs Bunny, Wonder Woman, Taz, Black Adam, Superman, Velma, Shaggy, Harley Quinn, Tom & Jerry, Garnet, Steven Universe, Iron Giant, and Jake are featured on the collab products – that’s not the entire roster from the MultiVersus test, as notable characters such as Arya Stark, LeBron James, and Rick & Morty are missing, but represents a substantial part of the line-up.

While this still doesn’t give us an exact date for the return of MultiVersus, which should be set to come to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, it’s certainly a strong indication for fans not having to be patient for that much longer.
