Netflix adds GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to its mobile library
Netflix has grabbed the mobile port of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that was originally set for a 2022 release and then went missing. Starting on December 14, 2023, it’ll be available for Netflix subscribers through the Netflix mobile app, the Google Play Store, and the App Store.
Contentwise, you can expect the same thing was from the PC and console release of the bundle in 2021, namely remastered versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. At launch, the trilogy was heavily criticized for coming with technical issues and being, in the eyes of many fans, less good looking than the original games had been. Rockstar outsourced the development of these remastered versions to Grove Street Games, while the Red Dead Redemption remaster, which seemed to have been executed much better, from this year was made by Double Eleven.

Netflix has quietly amassed a catalog consisting of over 80 mobile games in its library, which can be accessed by any subscriber to the streaming service without additional cost. It announced an expansion to its catalog only recently at Netflix Geeked Week 2023, among them the mobile port of Hades. Football Manager 2024 is another noteworthy addition from this year, which together with Hades marks a significant expansion into core game territory, giving the more casual library a lot of depth.
The streaming service has repeatedly emphasized that it’s very serious about its push into the gaming industry and has so far been very methodical in its execution of this strategy. The end goal for the company is to have “a game on Netflix for everyone” and for the service to become “a destination for must-play games,” according to Leanne Loombe, the VP of External Games at Netflix.
Getting a piece of the GTA pie ahead of the GTA 6 trailer release in December 2023 is another move into that direction.
