The big and illustrious family of Warhammer strategy games is getting a brand-new member in the form of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin. Developer Frontier took the stage at the PC Gaming Show 2023 to unveil a few short gameplay scenes from its first foray into the RTS genre. While it’s not an extensive deep-dive by any means, it definitely provided some key info, showing that Realms of Ruin is very clearly inspired by games like Dawn of War and Company of Heroes.

Base-building is kept to a minimum, victory and resource points dotted all over the map are the objectives players have to fight over, and many basic units take to the field in squads, while the higher level troops are single entities. Many units come with active abilities, be they magical or gained from their powerful equipment, which are another consideration players will have to keep in mind.

If that short look wasn’t enough for you to get an impression of the game, worry not: Frontier has announced a series of beta tests for Realms of Ruin and finalized the starting date for the first of these – players will be able to dive into 1v1 multiplayer matches from July 7 to 10, 2023, playing both the Stormcast Eternals and the Orruk Kruleboyz, two of the four factions from the tabletop game that’ll be represented in the RTS. You can sign up on the game’s official website.

Another open beta is scheduled for later in Summer 2023 and might contain the two hitherto unannounced playable factions.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Aside from several cross-platform multiplayer modes such as 1v1 and 2v2 matches, the game will feature an extensive single-player campaign.
