Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Chapter 4 is hugely expanded over the original, giving us the huge Lake to discover, in addition to a bunch of optional stuff. But one of the main puzzles you’ll need to solve in two different areas are the symbol pedestals. These are stone alters with multiple buttons, depicting symbols you might not recognize.

Lake Cave Shrine symbol puzzle – RE4 Remake

Both of these puzzles are solved by finding symbols drawn in yellow paint on the cave walls, and then pressing the buttons relating to those symbols on the stone pedestals. There are three symbols in each cave for each puzzle. Solve this first one for the Apostate’s Head.

Starting at the Lake Cave Shrine, which is next to where you find the boat in this chapter, you’ll see the following symbols on the walls.

This pair of icons.

I call this one “weird brackets.”

This round boy with a bridge in the middle.

Tap those symbols into the stone pedestal to solve this area.

Small Cave Shrine symbol puzzle – RE4 Remake

The Small Cave Shrine has an identical puzzle, just in a different order. This one will reward you with the Blasphemer’s Head.

This symbol with three points is half on the wall outside.

These two lines are also half on the wall.

These are three wiggly snakes, in my opinion.

Tap those into the stone pedestal, and you’ll be able to take the key item away from here and finally get the Church Key.
