The Resident Evil 4 remake is just around the corner and it will reimagine one of the best survival horror games on modern platforms. While the original version of Resident Evil 4 was a single-player experience, the Resident Evil series is no stranger to multiplayer modes and co-op options.

So, you might be wondering if the remake of one of the best Resident Evil games will allow you to play with or against your friends. Here’s everything we know about multiplayer and co-op in the Resident Evil 4 remake.

Does Resident Evil 4 remake have multiplayer?

No, the Resident Evil 4 remake does not feature multiplayer at launch and its story is a single-player experience only. Also, the game is listed as “single-player” in all digital stores where it is available to pre-order.

Turning a story like Resident Evil 4’s into a multiplayer experience is tricky and, more importantly unwanted, as it could be detrimental to the game’s unique spooky atmosphere, which is clearly designed to be played solo.

Can you play the Resident Evil 4 remake campaign in co-op mode?

Again, as with multiplayer, the answer here is no, Resident Evil 4 remake will not have co-op mode. Even though there are parts of the story where you play alongside AI companions like Ashley, your friends can’t control them.

During the February 2023 State of Play showcase, developer Capcom announced the return of “The Mercenaries” mode, which will be added as free DLC after the remake’s release. But this is again a single-player mode, where you kill as many enemies as possible within a given time limit, to get a high score.

Still, some fans have discussed how Mercenaries could make for a good co-op mode, as this has been done before with The Mercenaries 3D spin-off game, released in 2011 on the Nintendo 3DS. Nevertheless, for now, these are just fan speculations, as the Resident Evil 4 remake will be a strictly single-player game.
