Starfield Puddle Glitch: how to easily get infinite money

How to use the Starfield Puddle Glitch to get infinite money

Update (Sep. 26, 2023): With the release of the Starfield 1.7.33 update, the puddle glitch in Akila City has been fixed, along with similar glitches that would allow players to access a vendor's full inventory chest for infinite money and loot. The only way to keep using the exploit described in the guide below is to turn off automatic updates for Starfield on your Xbox console or PC, or to roll back to a previous version of the game on PC.

Original (Sep. 15, 2023): It’s been a few weeks since the first Starfield infinite money glitch was discovered, but now players have found a new, much easier one that you can use without needing to break the boundaries of the level. Dubbed the “Puddle Glitch” this lets you grab at a shop’s inventory in a way the game doesn’t count as stealing, letting you loot everything inside.

We’ll explain how to perform the Starfield Puddle Glitch to get infinite credits.

The way shops work in Bethesda games is quite simple. A shop’s inventory is determined by a chest, usually hidden under the floor of the level full of all the items and credits a shop stocks. When you open the shop to buy/sell stuff, all you’re actually doing is giving/taking items and credits from that chest, which has its inventory reset after 24 in-game hours.

The glitch comes from when these chests aren’t hidden properly, and in this case, it’s the chest of Shepard’s General Store, which was placed to close to the surface, meaning you can access it through the floor. There was a glitch exactly like this in Skyrim involving one of the Khajit caravans, and the team at Bethesda clearly hasn’t learned from their mistake.

Head to Akila City in the Cheyenne system and you’ll see Shepard’s General Store as the first building on the left as you enter the city through the main gate. On the floor outside there is a small puddle on the floor just outside, walk up to it and crouch down.

Hover your cursor over the puddle, roughly on the right-hand side as you’re facing the store. It’s a little easier in the third person, but you should eventually hit the sweet spot where the chests’ inventory will flash up on your screen.

You can then scroll through it and take anything you want – it won’t count as stealing. Then find a chair or bed and wait/sleep for 24 in-game hours, after which the chest will have been replenished and you can loot it all over again.
