If you ever wanted to recruit a Gundam in Total War: Warhammer 3, then Saytang the Watcher, the brand-new Legendary Hero added to the Shadows of Change DLC with Update 4.2, is what you’re looking for. This mighty construct is the first Legendary Hero available to Grand Cathay and comes equipped with a legendary weapon, the Wind Bow. As you can infer from this, the automaton is essentially a walking artillery piece akin to the Tomb Kings’ Bone Giant.

Saytang’s fiery form sports wings, though these don’t allow the Terracotta Sentinel to fly freely – instead, it can leap large distances, keeping foes out of melee range to bring its ranged power to bear more effectively. Not that anyone would actually want to face this giant in melee combat.

Find out below how to recruit Saytang the Watcher in Total War: Warhammer 3.

Naturally, you’ll need to purchase the Shadows of Change DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3, as Saytang is part of the expansion’s content.

Next, choose one of the Legendary Lords from Grand Cathay to begin a new campaign with – at the time of writing, Miao Ying, Zhao Ming, and Yuan Bo are the three possible options.

Play the campaign as normal until you conquer three full provinces, not counting Great Bastion Gates. At the start of your next turn, you should get the quest “Who Watches the Watcher?” – this is the first step towards recruiting Saytang to your cause. “Who Watches the Watcher?” requires you to kill 1,500 enemies in battle, so find some sacrificial victims and get to work.

Saytang's recruitment quest comes after Turn 20.

Once you’ve completed this quest, a second mission is issued. It’s titled “Stone Legions” and wants you to maintain at least five construct units at the same time. Jade Lions, Jet Lions, Terracotta Sentinels and the Terracotta Sentinel Regiment of Renown count as this type. Your earliest opportunity to build such units comes with Celestial Tower, a Tier 3 building, which allows you to call upon Jade Lions and Jet Lions.

When you’ve recruited five of these and enter a new turn, Saytang the Watcher will appear next to your faction leader. You’ll also get an event for recruiting him, allowing you to pick between two powerful bonuses that last for seven turns. One buffs the weapon strength of constructs, the other increases the missile damage of bow units. Choose one of the options and Saytang the Watcher is yours to command.

Make sure to check out the new Shadows of Change content for Tzeentch and Kislev, too.
