After a delightfully unhinged Twitter marketing campaign this past week confirming the game would have characters, music, and story, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has finally had a proper reveal, and a release window. As revealed in the Summer Game Fest showcase, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be launching exclusively on PS5 in early 2024.

The trailer during the show picks up immediately after the end of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with the gang in a pretty bad shape after their showdown with Sephiroth. We see Cloud and friends taking steps outside of Midgar, into the world of Gaia, with plenty of gorgeous landscapes on display.

There were a few surprises in store too — Red XIII is playable, which is a nice step up from Remake, and there’s some real wild story shenanigans going on. It’s safe to say that this is not the Final Fantasy 7 you know and love, but instead a new, alternate story that looks set to change everything you thought you knew about the classic game.

Those nostalgic for the original are in for a “nice” treat though, as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will ship with two discs in the case. That’s the first PS5 game that we know of that uses more than one disc out of the box, but also means the game could be up to 200GB. You might want to pick up an SSD for your PS5 in anticipation.

Here’s how Square Enix describes the game:

Get a first glimpse at the captivating story, thrilling gameplay and expansive world of FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, the highly anticipated new story in the critically acclaimed FINAL FANTASY VII remake project.

In this standalone adventure, Cloud Strife and his friends have escaped the dystopian city of Midgar and embark on a new journey across the wide world of Gaia to pursue the vengeful swordsman, Sephiroth.

Find out which mysteries the party will uncover when FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH arrives on PS5™ in early 2024. Players can explore an expansive world, all brought to life with a new level of graphical fidelity, developed specifically to leverage the power of the PS5 console.
