CD Projekt Red has announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive an official mod editor on PC in 2024, almost ten years after the game’s initial launch in 2015.

The Polish developer shared the following message in the context of this announcement: “We're thrilled to announce that we're working on a mod editor for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! It will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quests and content. We’re planning on releasing it for free in 2024. Stay tuned – we'll have more to share next year!”

Modders will be able to build new adventures for Geralt in the future.

In the comments, the official account clarified once more that these tools will only be available for PC, not consoles.

Naturally, talented modders have been customizing The Witcher 3 for many years at this point and CD Projekt Red developers even integrated many popular community mods into the RPG’s official next-gen upgrade – famously including a mod that implemented realistic-looking monster vaginas into the game. As if The Witcher 3 hadn’t already been one of the raunchiest games of all time, eh?

While modding The Witcher 3 is already very much possible – to great effect, even – and will always require a certain level of talent and effort, having a set of official tools provided by the developers changes the landscape and will surely open up a great many possibilities. Plus, it makes the hobby more accessible as well, which means that more people will get to try being creative. And that can only be a good thing.

Think about how many people still play Skyrim thanks to that game’s talented modding scene, or how the best Total War: Warhammer 3 mods are keeping that struggling juggernaut going amidst official content droughts. This move by CD Projekt Red isn’t just a great gift to the community, it ensures that The Witcher 3 will further cement itself in the collective history of video games as an all-time great with a long legacy.
