The Dwarfs don’t have it easy in Total War: Warhammer 3 now that their twisted cousins have arrived in Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs. Update 3.0 for the strategy game, which launched along with the DLC, may have added Ulrika Magdova to Kislev and the Empire, but the good old Dawi only got a few balance adjustments on this occasion – at least those included quite a valuable buff to the missile resistance of most of their infantry.

The developers have confirmed that they are looking to rework the Dwarfs in the future to bring them up to speed with factions that were introduced later and they may even get access to the Chaos Dwarfs’ Relic mechanic as well, which would be a cool campaign feature to drive them into conflict with the Dawi-Zharr.

Until that’s the case, however, the Dwarfs will have to work with the tools they’ve got – old they might be, but still effective when used correctly.

Best Dwarfs melee infantry: Ironbreakers

Creative Assembly

Ironbreakers are costly and slow, but they may just be one of the best infantry units in the entire game when it comes to holding the line – their armor and melee defense are amazing and their shields give them even more protection, especially after the buffs in update 3.0. As Dwarfs, they come with a naturally high magic resistance, which makes it difficult to dislodge them with spells despite their limited mobility.

Ironbreakers use axes and shields in melee combat, but can disrupt enemy formations charging at them with the grenades they carry as a precursor missile weapon. Ideally, you never charge your Ironbreakers into combat, because their bonus for attacking is miniscule – they are a wall the enemy breaks itself against.

Best Dwarfs ranged infantry: Quarrellers

Quarrellers may be the lowest-tier ranged infantry Dwarfs can field, but they are absurdly cost-effective. Carrying powerful Dwarf-crafted crossbows, these troops don’t need the direct line of sight gunpowder units are depending on. While they admittedly won’t help you much to defeat heavily armored opponents, Quarrellers shred anything else they set their sights on – they have solid range and their own armor will give them an edge in many shoot-outs with other ranged units. They are also competent in melee combat, making them valuable even after their ammunition has run out.

They are also more beginner-friendly to use than the phenomenal Irondrakes, whose flamethrowers can potentially kill hundreds of troops in just a few shots – but landing them is the tricky part, as it requires excellent positioning.

Best Dwarfs monster: Yoked Carnosaur

The Dwarfs didn’t have a monstrous unit for a very long time – and the Yoked Carnosaur still isn’t a regular troop type you can build several of, so we’re cheating a bit by including it here. You can only unlock this Regiment of Renown in the Forge, adding a single Carnosaur to your military.

This beast isn’t any different from the Feral Carnosaurs the Lizardmen have access to, though it is a unique rarity in the Dwarfs’ roster, adding a large unit with the ability to cause fear and terror among enemy troops. It’s a cool bit of storytelling as well – after all, why wouldn’t the Dwarfs living in the mountains of Lustria try to tame a few of the giant jungle creatures of that continent?

Best Dwarfs flying war machine: Gyrobomber

Did you call for air support? Well, here it is! The Gyrobomber is a perfect weapon to use in conjunction with some of the other parts of the Dwarfs’ roster such as the Ironbreakers. Let enemy infantry mass up against your brave warriors, trying to break through their lines, and then swoop in with your Gyrobombers and release their payload right into their formation.

You’ll want to be really careful with those bombs, of course, as releasing them above your own troops would be rather costly. The Gyrobombers themselves require a lot of micro, as they are quite vulnerable to other flyers and missile troops, so chart a safe course for them. Once you are in position, though, they will be well worth the hassle.

Best Dwarfs artillery: Flame Cannons / Organ Guns

Dwarfen artillery is pretty specialized, so it’s difficult to crown one type as the best overall. Flame Cannons and Organ Guns best work in concert with each other, as they focus on different kinds of prey: Flame Cannons annihilate anything that isn’t heavily armored, drowning enemies in fire as they come into range, while Organ Guns feature armor-piercing missiles that easily shred high-value targets. Organ Guns have a high rate of fire, since each artillery piece has four guns.

Best Dwarfs Regiment of Renown: Norgrimlings Ironbreakers

Norgrimlings Ironbreakers have the highest base melee defense in the entire game, are nearly unbreakable with a leadership of 95, and are completely immune to psychological effects – any enemy wanting to get through them will have to kill every single one of these stalwart Dwarfs to get past. Another cool feature about this Regiment of Renown is their Vanguard Deployment skill, which gives them a little edge when it comes to positioning themselves where they need to be.
