FuRyu announces stylish new urban fantasy RPG Reynatis

Featuring work from Kazushige Nojima and Yoko Shimomura

FuRyu, makers of The Caligula Effect and the Persona-like Monark are back with Reynatis, an urban anime RPG set in a “painstakingly recreated” Shibuya. That’s not just marketing speak, either. Reynatis’ vision of Shibuya looks exceptionally detailed, more like something you’d see in a Yakuza game compared to Persona 5’s or Neo: The World Ends With You’s take on the district.

Reynatis follows a wizard named Marin on a mission, one that pitches them into open conflict with Sari, an officer of the MEA organization. The thing about this version of Tokyo is that wizards aren’t welcome there. People fear magic and those who use it, so any wizards in Tokyo try their hardest to avoid letting their mystical abilities show. The results are never pretty when a wizard breaks cover.

It’s a setup we’ve seen quite a bit before, admittedly, even in 2023’s Final Fantasy 16, but it sounds like Reynatis puts a bit of a life-sim spin on it. You’ll explore the city like a regular civilian by day, taking on quests and delving into its nooks and crannies for hidden secrets, and then use your wizardly might to take down enemies. You can choose to remain hidden or let your magic flow at any time, though in the parallel universe dubbed Another, you’ll want to fully embrace your alternate form against the flood of monsters who aren’t happy that you’re there.

Kazushige Nojima, who’s worked extensively on the Final Fantasy series, including FF7 Rebirth, wrote Reynatis’ scenario. Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy 15, and Super Mario RPG composer Yoko Shimomura wrote the score.

Reynatis launches for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC in fall 2024. It’s a busy season for NIS America. The publisher will also release Ys X Nordics in fall 2024, following Trails through Daybreak’s launch in summer 2024.
