And it has a more ethical AI policy than most companies

Modders of the Total War: Warhammer 3 community have achieved a revolutionary breakthrough that has been years in the making, which resulted in the release of a mod called The Audio Mixer. In short, this mod allows users to implement custom sounds in the game to their hearts’ content. This in itself has already been achieved in the past, but only with some limits: For example, you could only have one mod with modified sound files active at a time.

The Audio Mixer allows users to play with as many of these mods as they wish, paving the way for truly game-changing experiences.

“First of all let me say I've been piecing together the passion puzzle of audio for the past seven months but Ole and ChaosRobie have been working on this for years and have paved the way. Without them, none of this fun stuff would ever be possible,” the elated modding team wrote on Steam Workshop.

What have the modders conjured up this time?

It also credited developer Creative Assembly for its active support of these efforts. An interesting note in the mod’s FAQ section mentions that CA have advised against people using AI-generated voices in their mods, which the creators of the program support. “CA have advised against the use of AI in place of voice actors so the Audio Mixer will not facilitate any audio generated with AI. Voice actors are valuable, let's use them,” the section said. It’s good to see both parties support an ethical policy here.

Total War: Warhammer 3 mods have come a long way with the talented creators finding ever more ways of expanding the borders of what’s possible – quite literally, in the case of Immortal Empires Expanded and The Old World. Recently, the OvN Araby mod stunned the community with its custom models and voice acting, setting a high bar for other faction mods.

With The Audio Mixer now having unlocked another gate towards yet more possibilities, we can’t wait to see what the modding community comes up with next.

For now, the ball is in Creative Assembly’s court, though: The free Shadows of Change content update as well as a major patch for the game have been announced to come in February 2024.
